Chaeli Mycroft and Anita Engelbrecht will be making Comrades Marathon history on 29 May 2016 when they take to the road as the first ever wheelchair athletes to participate in the Comrades. They will be assisted by their running partners on the 89km downhill run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. These dynamic ability activists challenged the CMA Race Rule that stated “no wheelchairs or mechanical aids” would be allowed entry into the Comrades.
Team Beastie, made up of Chaeli in the jogger and her running partners, James Chevallier & Brett Glen, and Team Blitsige Blitsie, made up of Anita in the jogger and her running partner, Hilton Murray, will be using their time out on the road to create awareness around inclusion and will be fundraising in order to create opportunities for children/youths with disabilities to experience the joy of exercise and the sense of belonging that comes through participation in sport.
